Oakleigh Carnegie RSL Centenary Exhibition

The Oakleigh Carnegie RSL Sub Branch is proud to celebrate its centenary this year and to remain an important place for veterans, their families and carers. The club is a traditional RSL (no gaming) and prides itself on also being a community club welcoming its local community to enjoy the facilities available.

In honour of the Centenary the History Monash Committee through historian, Helen Gobbi, have prepared a very special exhibition at the Monash Federation Centre, 3 Atherton Road Oakleigh.

The Exhibition was launched last Thursday at the Monash Federation Centre and includes interviews with Oakleigh Carnegie RSL Life Members, Ted Young and Hugh Gordon, as well as long-time member, Neil Smith.

The exhibition is open from 10.00 am to 5.00 pm Tuesdays and Thursdays until the end of December. A special opportunity to view the exhibition will be available following the Remembrance Sunday Commemorative Service to be conducted by the RSL at the Cenotaph, Cnr Drummond St and Atherton Rd Oakleigh on Sunday 10th November from 10.30 am. To allow those attending the service to view the exhibition the Monash Federation Centre will be open until 12.30 pm on that day.

In opening the exhibition, Oakleigh Carnegie RSL President, Doug Pendergast said that it was a great pleasure and honour to be present.

“At the Oakleigh Carnegie RSL we are extremely proud that we continue to honour those who have gone before us, and continue their legacy of support and care for those who have continued to serve, and for so many who now find their transition from active service is extremely difficult.”

He said that the strength of the Oakleigh community during and immediately after World War, and their work in establishing the Sub Branch in 1919, and then working to ensure funds were raised to erect the building which we still occupy, remains an inspiration for us and a commitment by us to ensure we retain and improve the facilities and services available.

“The exhibition provides further opportunity to ensure that not only RSL members but our broader community can learn and understand the depth of service and commitment that so many have given.”

He encouraged family and friends to visit this wonderful exhibition, and then come up the road to a traditional RSL Club and enjoy our wonderful facilities.
